Sale of home brews to benefit United Way

It may not seem out of the ordinary to many to hear that beer was being brewed at Straub Brewery on Saturday morning, but what was unique about the beer in question this past Saturday was that it was not the brewery's beer but instead was a recipe created by area resident Adam Correll.

Regis R. Yeager, 67, of 1048 Brechtel Rd., Rasselas, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, 2014 at his residence following a short illness.
He was born May 11, 1947 in Spangler, son of the late Archibald and Ruby Myers Yeager.
On July 2, 1990 in St. Marys, he married Sandra Brechtel, and she survives.
He resided in the Wilcox-Rasselas area since he was 18. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1967.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, and the Ridgway Fire Department for 16 years. He loved hunting, fishing and farming.

Roy F. Healy

Roy F. Healy, 89, of 405 Maple Ave., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 24, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 2, 1925 in Ridgway, son of the late Claude and Mae (Hawk) Healy.
He married Rita M. Frank on June 14, 1952, she survives.
He had resided in Ridgway all of his life, and he was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the church choir, the Ridgway Fire Department - Second Ward for 52 years, and the American Legion.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, and he was a veteran of WWII.

Verna "Lavonne" Oermann

Verna "Lavonne" Oermann, 88, of 200 Dippold Ave., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014 at her residence.
She was born May 3, 1926 in Timblin, daughter of the late Otis and Jeanette Brocious Snyder. She was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School and had resided in St. Marys since 1989. On Aug. 10, 1947, in Punxsutawney, she married Claude Karl Oermann, who preceded her in death in 1988.

Crusaders remain undefeated with win at Ridgway

A win for Elk County Catholic boys basketball over a state-ranked rival gave ECC the No. 1 seed in the Elk County Holiday Tournament this weekend. Perhaps early Christmas presents for ECC and their supporters, perhaps a figurative lump of coal for the Elkers and their fans.
Elk County Catholic remained undefeated with a 57-43 win at Ridgway Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.

Light display brightens Christmas

As a staple of St. Marys holiday displays, Paul Schneider of Averyville Road has been creating his famous lighting scenes for the past 35 years. His Christmas display is his largest, followed by Halloween as a close second.
The display, done mostly in clear lights, spans Schneider's front, side and back yards. Among the festive display are two Nativity scenes, angels, toy soldiers, Santa Claus, carolers, and an array of snowmen along with other winter characters. Schneider also creates displays for Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, St. Patricks, Easter, and the Fourth of July.

Toby Water customers receive clean water for Christmas

Just in time for Christmas, Toby Water customers in Fox Township were informed Tuesday the boil water notice had been lifted following the discovery of a potentially dangerous parasite found in the local water system just over a month ago.
According to Rob Singer, Toby Water Treatment Plant system operator, the township installed an upgraded connection to St. Marys Water in order to supply customers with much needed clean water.

Favorite coach contest entering fourth year

The annual Coaches vs. Cancer program, which raises funds to benefit the American Cancer Society, will once again be held in conjunction with the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the St. Marys Area High School. According to Roben Daghir, who coordinates the annual fundraiser, this year's event will featuring returning favorites as well as new additions.

Michele "Michael" Costanzo

Michele "Michael" Costanzo, 91, of 314 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born July 2, 1923 in Platina, Italy, son of the late Francisco and Maria Rosa Visconti Costanzo.
On Feb. 27, 1947, he married Emanuela Perri in Italy. She died Aug. 13, 2013.
He resided in Johnsonburg since 1950 and had graduated from high school in Italy.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church where he was very active and was an usher for many years. He was an avid gardener.
He served in the army in Italy.

Jeanette T. "Janet" Yonker

Jeanette T. "Janet" Yonker, 89, of 155 W. Mill St., Ridgway, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at her home.
She was born Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1925, a daughter of the late Wilfred and Clara Young Neubert.
On July 30, 1960 in St. Benedict's in Daguscahonda, she married Paul Yonker, who survives.
