Rams’ Grumley wins 9-AA golf title; ECC’s Eliott Struble takes second

Johnsonburg’s Cameron Grumley captured the District 9-AA individual golf championship on Saturday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, with Elk County Catholic’s Elliott Struble placing second.
After Monday’s first round, Struble and Josh Roselli of Ridgway had a two-stroke lead over Grumley. Struble and Roselli both shot 75s on Monday, while Grumley had a 77.

Dutch soccer downs Smethport Hubbers 6-3 Saturday

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team raised their record to 5-6 on the season with a 6-3 victory over the Smethport Hubbers Saturday at the SMAHS soccer field.
The Dutch took control of the game early as they opened a 3-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the contest.
The scoring started with 37:50 left in the first half when Tim Mosebarger scored for the Dutch, giving St. Marys the early 1-0 lead.
At the 35:22 mark, Dutchman Josh Burns made the score 2-0 when he scored off a corner kick by Jarrod Lipsey.

Lady Crusader tennis downs Lady Dutch Friday

St. Marys Area girls' tennis team lost to ECC 7-2 in a match that started on Thursday and ended on Friday after being suspended due to rain. St. Marys is now 5-5 on the season.
"(Friday) was another good match between two good teams," said ECC coach Pete Meier. "Both squads played very well considering the weather. Tennis is supposed to be played on dry courts with temps in the 70s. (Friday) it was rainy and 50, but I have to give the girls on both teams a lot of credit for playing very good tennis under such adverse conditions."

Crusader soccer drops 6-1 match to Punxsy

FOX TWP. – Two days after finally breaking back into the win column with a 3-2 victory over Curwensville on the road, the Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer team was back in action at home against a solid Punxsutawney squad on Saturday afternoon in a very physical contest. Things did not go as well for the Crusaders on Saturday though, as they were unable to get another winning streak going, gave up the most goals they have allowed all season in the 6-1 loss, and were outshot by the Chucks 23-8.

Punxsy shuts down Lady Crusaders
 
ST. MARYS — The scoreless minutes continue to mount for the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders. On Saturday at Benzinger Park, it was the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks who left with a 1-0 victory over ECC.
The shutout raises ECC's scoreless streak at home to 480 minutes-- or all six home matches this season. The victory for Punxsutawney was the Lady Chucks' first-ever against the Lady Crusaders, who had a 7-0 series advantage entering this latest tilt.

ECC cross country teams compete in McQuaid Invitational

The Elk County Catholic boys' and girls' cross country teams competed in the McQuaid Invitational on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.
The Lady Crusaders finished 10th out of 21 teams in the small schools seeded race, while the Crusaders came in 16th out of 29 teams in the small schools unseeded race.

3-vehicle crash holds up Boot Jack for 7 hours

A Minuteman Environmental Services 18-wheeler hauling brine water wrecked Sunday afternoon after rounding the curve in front of Boot Jack Road and turning on its side.
The large vehicle collided with two vehicles, a burgundy Ford Explorer and a white Ford truck, which were descending down Boot Jack Road. There were no injuries reported.

New law requires training for mandated reporters of suspected child abuse

In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State, additional focus has been placed on the state’s Child Protective Services law and mandated reporting requirements for suspected child abuse under that law.
According to the state Department of Public Welfare (DPW), any professional who engages with children in their employment, occupation or professional practice is known as a “mandated reporter” and is obligated by law to report suspected child abuse.

Fox Twp. organizers planning bicentennial events

Planning is well under way for a weekend-long agenda of events as part of the Fox Township Bicentennial taking place June 28-30, 2013.
Community members are pitching in and lending a hand with various events by attending monthly organizational meetings headed up by Bicentennial Committee Chairpersons Kathy and Jamie Dowie, Lee Neureiter and Cheryl and Don Ruffner.

Man charged in hit-and-run enters 'not guilty' plea

RIDGWAY - A St. Marys man charged in connection with a July 28 hit-and-run that left 21-year-old Natasha Schmitz in critical condition entered a not guilty plea in waiving his arraignment on charges related to the incident.
