Ridgway wins Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament

ST. MARYS – Ridgway was spurred on by a 24-point performance from senior guard Eric Matheson as the Elkers won the Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 45-38 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night at St. Marys Area High School.

Quiggle rallies Dutchmen to edge Crusaders 57-56 in OT

With the Dutchmen down by eight headed into the fourth quarter of Friday afternoon's Elk County Boys' Holiday Tournament consolation game against Elk County Catholic, St. Marys Area senior Justin Quiggle led a furious rally, adding 16 points to tie the score at 50-all at the end of regulation. The Dutchmen were then able to use that momentum to edge the Crusaders 57-56 in overtime to take the win.

Lady Crusaders capture 2011 Elk County basketball crown

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders stayed perfect on the season as they defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 41-35 score Friday night to capture the 2011 Elk County Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament crown. The Lady Crusaders are now 7-0.
The game was close for most of the 32 minutes of play. With 5:18 left in the game, the Lady Dutch were able to knot the score at 33 on a foul shot by Becky Krieg. In the closing minutes, Elk Catholic was able to outscore St. Marys 8-2 to win the game 41-35.
“It was nice to get the win,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Ramettes roll by Ridgway in consolation game

ST. MARYS – The Ramettes (3-5) were rarely contested Friday in a 54-20 victory over winless Ridgway in the consolation game of the 30th annual Elk County girls holiday basketball tournament.
The Ramettes were led by Brittany Watts with 15 points, while Chelsea Benson and Rhianon Fowler contributed 10 points each; Ridgway's leading scorer was Nicole Breier with eight points.
Johnsonburg applied heavy defensive pressure early on to trigger multiple turnovers in the first quarter en route to a 20-3 lead.

James D. Lodes

James D. Lodes, 69, of 11 Mertz Avenue, St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at his home.
He was born April 15, 1942 in St. Marys, a son of the late Edward A. and Catherine G. Fritz Lodes.
Mr Lodes was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Sacred Heart and Central Catholic schools. He had worked at Powdered Metal Products and had also worked at Penn Pallet for many years.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was known for his love of dogs.

Vivian Bernadene Hanes Leehan

Vivian Bernadene Hanes Leehan, 74, of Edinboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 at St. Vincent Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born in St. Marys, on May 20, 1937, a daughter of the late Barbara Reuscher Hanes.
Vivian had many passions in life, first and foremost was her love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved traveling, gardening, lawn work, bingo, bowling and golfing. Vivian lived to care for her children and her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone.

ST. MARYS – The Lady Dutch avenged a season-opening loss to Johnsonburg with a 42-33 win Thursday to get them into today's Elk County Holiday Tournament final against unblemished Elk County Catholic.

Lady Crusaders advance to championship

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders will play in the championship game of the Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament after a 59-25 victory over Ridgway Thursday afternoon at St. Marys Area High School.

Rams hold off Crusader rally, win 40-37

The Johnsonburg Rams held off a second-half rally by the Elk County Catholic Crusaders in yesterday evening's first-round game of the Elk County Holiday Boys' Basketball Tournament, winning 40-37 to advance to tonight's championship game versus the Ridgway Elkers.
Early on it looked like the Rams would have no trouble from the Crusaders as they outscored them 13-2 in the first period and 9-7 in the second quarter to take a 22-9 halftime lead.
